Significant other doesn't go the extra mile

How do you deal with a significant other who doesn't get you gifts or surprise you with anything every once in a while? Like every couple of months he should go out of his way to do something nice. I've talked to mine about it and it's all excuses. I'm always giving him gifts and surprising him. The favor is just never returned. He's an AMAZING boyfriend but I just want him to do things like that.
