When do I tell them?

We recently found out we are expecting and I'm dying to tell my 4 and 5 year old (they've been asking for a sibling for years) but I don't know how long I should wait. Do I wait until the 2nd trimester to be "safe" or is sooner ok?

When did you tell your kiddo(s) they were getting a sibling?

I would wait, only because I'm a first grade teacher and one of my students' mom told her that she was having a baby and at their 12 week appt, there was no longer a heartbeat. The girl was devastated and I'm sure it didn't help for her to see me get bigger and bigger every week!

We told our son around 11 weeks after we had an ultrasound and all was well. Congratulations!!

If you're having no complications I would show them the sonogram when you get one

Make it a scavenger hunt and see if they can put the pieces together

We told them at 14 weeks, because my son knew something was wrong and kept saying that he hoped I would feel better soon. We didn't want him to think his mommy was seriously sick or anything.
