help please baby food

So I make my own baby food my son is 6 months and he like sucks it in and doesn't do very good. What can I do to help him learn how to take bites. Is he old enough to start giving table food to him like soft cooked carrots and potatoes? He wants to chew but the purred food just doesn't work for him
