Boyfriend says he doesn't see the point to marriage

So my boyfriend has said that he really doesn't see the need/point to marriage and how he doesn't need a piece of paper to tell him who he loves. But marriage is really important to me and when he asks why I think that and I try to explain but it always comes out dumb... to me it symbolizes a partnership and a commitment to each other, and then there is those benifits of marriage that common law doesn't have (ex. Being able to see them/visit in the hospital). But I just don't know how to word everything
