Just a little positivity

Yesterday I was with my 9 month old in the park. We were watching the older children play, just dreaming of being able to join in.

A mom sitting near our blanket on a bench called her daughter off the equipment, away from the 3 or 4 other youngsters she had befriended. I saw her point casually at a little boy sitting on the sidelines, and she said to her daughter "I think that little boy looks lonely, don't you?" the little girl nodded, her mother continued "How do you think you would feel if you were that little boy?" the little girl shrugged. Her mom gave her a hug, said she just wanted to ask her that question and that she could go back to her friends.

When her daughter ran off the mom asked me about my baby, and we began to trade mom stories. I don't normally approach people, I'm extremely shy, but I really enjoy talking to other moms. While we were talking I noticed the woman's daughter sitting beside the lonely little boy. She was chattering away animatedly and the little boy was smiling and giggling. After a few minutes they both jumped up and went to join the other kids in a very serious game of tag, with rules that made absolutely no sense to me.

When I was a kid I would have been that lonely child on the sidelines. I was touched by that little girl and her ability to befriend a child who clearly needed just a little nudge. I was touched by the mom that helped her daughter notice someone else's pain but didn't demand she do anything about it.

I wanted to share this story of a wonderful parenting moment. I thought maybe your day could use a little smile. There are good people out there.
