Everyone on here needs to read this article - scary and heartbreaking!

Ch
These are things we all need to be aware of and question our doctors about! This NPR article is about a mother who died of preeclampsia despite having tons of warning signs and her husband repeatedly questioning doctors and nurses about it. (Don't read at work because you WILL sob, it's tragic.)

But the point of the article is that this is not an isolated incident. Maternal deaths in the U.S. happen at nearly three times the rate of other developed countries - AND RISING - due to the fact that we lack strong standards of care for women around and after birth. Hospitals brush off maternal pain after birth, or don't accurately measure blood loss, or have no set routines for dealing with developing health issues (like in this story). Some ignore current standards, like around blood pressure. Many women are sent home with all kinds of instructions on baby care, but no info at all on when they themselves should seek medical care.
Not trying to freak us all out, but the more informed we are the safer we are. WE can cause change by asking our OBs and hospitals about how they support moms' health after birth. Please read!
