Have/Would you consider not getting a diamond for your engagement ring?

So after hearing all the horrible stuff about diamonds and how basically after you buy one the stone basically loses most to all of its value I just don't see a point in a diamond ring. I was wondering if anyone else felt the same. And if so what kind of ring did you get? 😊
