Protection question? Please help!

My boyfriend and I are trying to avoid pregnancy for the time being until further down the road. Until then, I've read numerous different things, one saying that there are only 6 days each cycle where a woman can get pregnant. I can't figure out my ovulation having been on birth control for years. Since I'm on birth control, we're trying to figure out if it'd be too much of a risk for him to go without any protection on his side. Any thoughts that might help? Thank you
