EX PROBLEMS! what does this mean ????

So me and my ex are now best friends. We've been up and down for a year. In a cycle; friends, more than friends, nearly back together, friends... the other day i said enough was enough and told him we were just friends and he said "if that's what you want". The next day he asked me to do a challenge with him. It was 'you have till 1am to tell me exactly how you feel about me. Whether that breaks my heart or makes my night'. So I said okay I'll do it. I explained that we were better as friends. Another person is involved on his behalf (he still has feelings for another ex) so I also said it's too complicated with them involved too.(he also knew I would never get back with him till his feelings for the other person had gone completely). I said I guess I do still have feelings for you but we won't/ can't be anything more than friends. He said that's pretty much the same for me.
