Hello, i am 15 years old. I have really irregular periods so not sure if it's an early period or spotting? I'm due to get my period in 5 days but i'm spotting lightly. Should i keep on fasting or not fast? Thank you xx

Salam love. I was having similar problems earlier this year and my baby sis has irregular periods so we are pretty well versed on this now - my bro in law is a mufti Alhamdulillah and this is what he advised. It can be confusing at the beginning but there are set rules. This is gonna be hard to explain lol but I shall try my best.

If your new bleed is at least 15 days after the last day of your last period, it is a period, if the following applies.

It is classed as a period if your spotting occurs at least once every three prayers, for three days. You need to check if you are spotting at each prayer time, and make a note of it.

• If you bleed every three prayers, then you should stop praying and fasting until three days have passed. If your bleeding does not last three consecutive days, it is not a period. You will have to perform kadha of any salah and fasting you missed.

• If you bleed at least once every three prayers, for three days, this is a period. You should not perform salah and keep fasts until you are able to do ghusl.

• If you bleed inconsistently, i.e. sometimes every three prayers and sometimes not (within the three days) this is istihadah bleeding. There are different rules on how to pray during istihadah, depending on the kind of bleed that is occurring. (I will try to find a link for you to explain the rules of istihadah)

• If you have a period within 15 days of your last one, this is NOT a period. It can be really uncomfortable, but you are expected to perform wudu before every salah and continue prayers. Similarly, if your period lasts more than ten days, anything after 10 days is not a period and you must resume prayers.

Salam! If you google irregular periods and islam there's a lot of information and how to handle it. I personally had very irregular periods as a teen. Sometimes I would bleed for months nonstop. Anyways, I hope that helps and you should ask your mom for advice on what to do. She'll definitely give you a more straightforward answer Inshallah
