Given Bill Maher's recent use of the "N" word does it matter if it ends in an "a" or "er"?

My students and I have been debating this issue. Their assignment was to poll at least 10 family memebers and neighbors. I'm polling you ladies! Strictly educational, not political or pot stirring.

I'm not sure how spelling stops it from being a racial slur. Racists make up the most wild excuses to justify the racist shit they say.

No, it doesn't matter. He shouldn't have said it, and quite honestly, he seemed a little too comfortable saying it. I don't care if he's "one of the good guys", was making a joke, or didn't use it in a racist context--it's not his word to use and he deserves the backlash right now.

I made a mistake and meant to say it doesn't matter. My mom would pop me in my mouth when I called my friend my nigga. My grandmother was furious with me. My grandmother was around during the segration times and never will ever use such words.

I think people get the impression that It's okay because it's used all the time in music and such, but bottom line is it's still a slur, it's not okay. It's like when someone says something racist and then says, "my friend is black/muslim/hispanic/Jewish/etc so I can say that." No. Not okay. Stop it. Is it really that hard to just not use certain words and be respectful that you have to find a way to justify it? English is a beautiful language with a plethora of other words you can use.

Some black people use the A at the end as a joke but I think it's worse if (sorry) a white person uses ER. Honestly their both bad in my opinion.
