Pacifiers?

We took a baby bathing class at the hospital tonight, and one of the nurses said that a paci could actually help teach your baby how to suck properly, and she's not against using them before 2 weeks. Any thoughts on this? Little guy is improving, but his biggest problem is he would suck 3 times then fall asleep. Could the paci help?

Interesting! My breastfeeding class said almost the opposite. The motions used on a paci is not quite like the motions when breastfeeding. With breastfeeding, a good latch includes the nipple and the *surrounding* areas too (the areola) and the baby "massages" the entire area, while a paci sort of shows the baby you only need to suck on the "nipple" part, which is not good for BF. 
It also effects the actually sucking muscles...the big good latch uses almost an entire jaw muscle/movement, while a nipple only latch uses a more..pierced? sucking and less of that jaw motion (if that makes sense? Can't describe it very well!). 
Although it sounds like other moms have had success, just wanted to pass along what I learned! 😊

My baby has been in the NICU since birth and his occupational therapist had us use the pacifier to practice and improve his sucking. He's now 40 weeks gestation and is finally breastfeeding like a champ!

Helped my son a bunch!! He uses to get latched and suck one and was out cold! And now since the binki he eats like a champ almost an hour some times 2 lol

It has helped my little guy. He had trouble latching. I use the soothies, closest to a real nipple.

Pacifiers do not mimic suckling at the breast and can de rail breastfeeding. At 3 weeks YOU need to be the pacifier not a piece of plastic. That on off suckling or dream feeding boosts your milk supply
