miscarriage bleeding- tampons or pads?

Had miscarriage today - I am bleeding quite heavily with clots. I never ever wear sanitary pads as I just feel like everyone can see them and they always leak for me! What is the reason we are told to use pads not tampons at this time? I'm changing it almost every hour.....
