Is it insane to think you could continue to have a relationship with an exs family?

So me and my girlfriend of 4 years split up on Monday. We don't gate each other and still want to be friends. But it's come that time in a breakup where I stop crying and feeling sorry for myself and try to work out the after math of our relationship. I was thinking about who would get the cat and then it dawned on me. Her family! I live her family so much they are like my FAMILY! I moved in with her and her parents when mine kicked me out when I was 16 when we first started dating. I was there for her niece and nephews birth! I take them out and act as though they're my own nieces and nephews and I can't stand to think after losing her I also lose apart of my family! So is it insaine to think I could continue to be in their lives? Her sister and I are really close and have talked since we broke up so u know she doesn't want to cut all ties! Idk

It's not impossible, but it might not be the healthiest thing for you long term. As you're maintaining a friendship, I'd talk it out with your ex, and see how it goes.

I think it would depend on the person. I can imagine it being extremely hard to move on still holding onto the past. I personally wouldnt be able to go to the kids parties and have my ex there with their new s/o .

I'm really close friends with my exs sister. My husband knows our friendship has nothing to do with my ex so he doesn't care.

Family doesn't have to be related by blood:). My bf's family are the coolest freaking people. Even if he and I split I'd still hangout with them. You just have to really discuss and communicate your feelings to each other.

Like with my bf, if we broke up for a few months I would not see his family while he's in town. He has some ex's over already as is because his mom does their eyelashes or waxes. Sometimes just to catch up on life. The family isn't just this object, it's full of people too. If he and I break up and his sisters still want to hang out with me he's said before they're their own people and can do as they please.

Well, my brother dated a girl in high school for almost a year. He broke up with her before they went to college and she was devastated. Her parents absolutely loved him, and I was close with the daughter also. Their parents were really upset about it, and it took them a couple years to get over it (cause their daughter started dating idiots and even married a guy they hate). But  now, they're like family to us. Myself, my husband, my brother and his girlfriend all recently had dinner with the parents. I would hate to lose them, they're amazing and loving people.

You can absolutely still have a relationship with your ex's family.

Yes, if you're close enough that and the breakup wasn't particularly acrimonious I don't see why not. My grandmother left her husband after about ten years. On her deathbed, his mother (my grandmothers former MIL) demanded that my grandmother be sent for and said that if she didn't come she would never forgive her son for the way he treated her.

I don't think it's insane. My mom is still very close with my dads family. If you and your ex can remain friendly then you should definitely try

If she's okay with it, then sure. But I'd think it be hard to move on for both of you and also hard to explain to a new partner lol but if it works for y'all, hey why not?
