medicine vs prayer
One of my neighbors is an elderly woman who is showing signs of dementia. She doesn't have her wits about her and she often becomes paranoid and confused. For instance every day she thinks someone breaks into her house and she calls the police to ask them to come to her house. She's even said stuff to me like "they're watching me."
Today she called me to thank me for checking on her and asked me to pray for her. I'm an atheist but I said I would anyways because I do wish she would get better and I equate prayers with hopes and wishes.
I asked her if she's been to the doctor and if she needed me to take her and she said she hasn't been to the doctor. She said she'd consider going but is just asking god to help her through this tough time instead.
There are a number of reasons she could be confused. Anything from liver disease to a UTI. My dad suffers from confusion so I'm very familiar with how these patients suffer and how scary the world they live in is.
Here's the debate...
Why do people rely so heavily on prayer instead of asking doctors for help. I know there are sects of Christianity who shun science and medicine in place of prayer?
When someone is healed, people thank god before thanking the doctor who saved their life. I have a hard time understanding this.
