should PLTW classes be required?

basically, if you don't know what a pltw class is, it's like a class that you can take in high school that will get you certain credits when you graduate and you don't have to take certain classes in colleges. at the school i teach at, in the high school, they require you to take at least one every year in order to graduate. my problem with that though is that the school only offers 3, which is biomedical science, teacher academy, and engineering. for example, if you take biomedical science, you don't have to take anatomy classes in college. i don't think every school requires you to take one to graduate, so i'm pretty sure this is left up to the superintendent of the school to decide. do you think they should be required in order to graduate?

I did the IB diploma program for high school. I had credit for first year inherits (6 credit hours each) of maths, physics, chemistry and sociology. I had to earn a 6/7 (a 90% in the class) to get credit. The amount of work that went into that was huge. I took my credit and while I'm glad I did, there were certainly holes. No high school class is going to cover enough for a university course. It didn't hurt me academically to take my credit at all, but I did need to fill a number of gaps. Not everyone is cut or for that kind of thing. Just as not everyone is capable of doing university level material in high school on top of learning what they need in high school. It doesn't mean these people aren't smart- it's just that the work load is too much, they need to learn at a slower pace, they need a stronger background/foundation before learning more advanced material, etc. Whatever the reason some people do not do well in those kinds of courses at all. So no I do not think it should be mandatory. If you want to do it and are willing to put in the work then go for it! But if it's not something you want it'll more than likely end up hurting your GPA and chances at getting into good schools purely because you're not as dedicated to the work.

Only if there is a reasonable selection...what if you don't want to be a teacher, medical professional or an engineer? Not a complete waste of time but it may be more useful to take a class related to your course choice.

I believe they aren't accepted at all colleges but what I do know is, I don't really remember a lot of stuff I learned in highschool.

In my school system, that is not PLTW courses. We had one class in the middle school called Project Lead The Way - it was an engineering/robotics course for the 8th graders (13/14 year olds). It was just to introduce them to more hands on type of work and the different forms of engineering.

Funny because I didn't end up taking the course but I ended up in engineering. So I don't think it necessarily needs to be required.

What you're defining, in my high school, was ECE courses - Early College Experience. Those were classes taught by a teacher who was certified by the most prominent state school to teach a college level course within the high school, in which if you received a B or higher and ended up enrolling into a state school, the credit was guaranteed to transfer (though not always towards major requirements).

I did enough of these courses that I ended up other a semesters worth of classes towards my engineering degree before even enrolling.

But, again, I don't think they should necessarily be required. They were mostly math and science courses, which many majors wouldn't require. Many students choose private institutions in which they wouldn't transfer as well as many don't even end up going into University.

My old one didn't require that, but you did have the option to go to a trade school for half of the day for mechanics or nursing. You could also take certain college classes through the school cheaper and it would replace your high school credits. I took college algebra to replace algebra 2 my junior year, psychology, and English comp 1&2 to cover my senior year of English
