"Joyful" Funeral Attire?

Question

I will be attending a memorial service for my fiance's mother, and his family has specified "joyful attire". I'm not sure what that means, but I'm wondering if a black dress, modest heels and basic diamond earrings would be appropriate. I also would prefer to wear a scarf to cover my neck (healing medialization laryngoplasty scar), and I have a light purple/pink flowery one that I would wear. Thoughts?

"Joyful attire" at a funeral usually mean not black. I would recommend wearing a lighter or brighter colour. If you're concerned definitely call and ask. It's always better to ask than to show up inappropriately dressed.

I just had a memorial service for my grandpa who passed away in January. I wore a pink open cardigan with a black tank top and a long skirt so it didn't look like I was going to a funeral. My older sister wore a summer maxi dress with a jacket. And other people who came wore jeans and a nice shirt. Nothing too fancy and most people didn't wear black

Usually "joyful" attire implies colourful. Black during a funeral which although is the norm and conventional represents mourning. They probably would rather have colourful attire in celebration of life/afterlife rather than mourning. But of course I would double check with someone in the family just in case
