Can't have male friends?

This is the first time I've been in a serious relationship and I have been for a little over a year now. I recently got a male friend (completely platonic) who I genuinely want to hang out with but my SO thinks differently. He said he would never get a female friend so why should I have a male friend even though i would be totally fine with him having a female friend 🤷🏽‍♀️. I'm just confused as to whether or not this is normal in most relationships or are there people out there that are genuinely ok with it. I feel like we are two very different people like I'm very independent and I didn't think this would be an issue but he is highly dependent and it's really showing now. This may be just another reason to find other people because I can't keep going on with constant fighting everytime I want to see my friends.
