Because sometimes things are written and people respond without reading the whole thing. Comment wars have started because of that. This can be a pet peeve of mine. Narwals.

Why narwhals though?  If I start reading something and I just can't get into what they are talking about I don't comment on it.

A friend of mine from college had to write a research paper on an animal in high school and he chose narwhals...his teacher tried to fail him for writing on a mythical creature.

If it's really long, no... I won't read it and I probably won't respond. Unless it's just really interesting and is well written and thought out and easy to follow. Some are pretty confusing! I always appreciate posts when they are short and sweet, and to the point.
