Infant carrier or convertible car seat??

Okay y'all. My husband and I are trying to figure out what would be best to get. We don't know if we should get an infant carrier to start out with and then go to a convertible later. Or if we should just get a convertible car seat to start out with. 
He wants to just get a convertible. And says we can carry the baby until they're old enough to hold their heads up and sit up in their own then we can put them in a stroller and a cart whenever we go somewhere. 
I was thinking get an infant seat while they're younger to carry them in. Then when they're old enough to hold themselves up get a convertible.

While those are great reasons to get right to the convertible, life was just so much easier having the infant car seat.

We used our infant seat a ton. I know it's the more costly route, but this is number three for us and we'll still do infant carrier then convertible.

infant seats are safer for newborns. some convertibles cannot support lighter weight newborns. I would go with an infant seat and then get the convertible seat later

Can you put an infant in a convertible car seat? I thought you needed both

I would say to get both. Reason I say this is when you go shopping with a baby it's not the easiest I mean when shop at regular stores yes they have carts and such.
But when you go to smaller clothing stores they have nothing. And carrying a sweet baby in your arms along with your purse and maybe a diaper bag becomes heavy weights trust me.
Get the baby carrier to be hands free and the convertible just in case you need it

I had the same debate in my own head over what to do. It's Baby 3 here and I'm trying to be smart this time around. I was leaning toward be convertible at first, but after talking to my husband changed my mind. 
I still decided to the infant travel system. It'll make any trips with an infant much easier (and I do baby wear, but who wants to wake the baby every time I need to take my other kid to school or get groceries?). Plus, that stroller will work right on even after the car seat doesn't! Anddddd the base is a wonderful from my past experiences! 
With that being said, I purposely searched for infant seats that would carry a heavier child so it'll last longer. Some stop at 30, 35, or 40 lbs. I'd try to find the most cost efficient one you like that will hold the baby the longest.
