His own name or family name??

My husband's side of the family has a lot of Richards (some aren't with us anymore) The name hasn't been used yet for our fam's newest generation. So far the babies in our family are being given more trendy names. So we're considering bringing Richard back in style for our son :) we'd call him Ricky. At the same time, we wonder if we should give him his own name & maybe use Richard as his mn. We also really like the names Jonathan (Jonny/Jon), Cole, and Ian.
