Homeless man upset me...
I have a big heart... I give un-begrudgingly... So it really never occurred to me that doing so would ever make me rethink philanthropy.
The other day I gave a $20 gift certificate to the Goodwill and some toiletries to a homeless man in my area. He told me that he soiled himself and needed to clean up. However, when I handed him the items he got upset that he wasn't getting cash. So upset that he hurt my feelings. To be fare the moment he noticed I was bothered he apologized profusely and seemed genuinely moved.
But I cant help but think how I would have preferred to give the items to someone else. I've been homeless before. I know the struggle and appreciate how hard it is to not be independent and need to look to others for basic human needs. BUT - I also learned to be grateful for any blessing that came my way.
At the end of the day I prayed about it and moved on. I will not hold any ill feelings toward anyone and can sleep well. It just bothered me...
