Should it be legally mandatory for people with insane amounts of money to have to donate something when disastrous situations strike like Harvey?

Obviously I know this would be hard to regulate but I always wish I could donate to people in need but I've got my own shit going on but I always say if I was rich I would help so many.  Sorry if this is worded poorly I'm extremely tired lol

i'm pretty socialistic , but what you're describing is outright communism . you can't force people to part with their hard earned gains for the greater good . it becomes a very slippery slope because then who would determine what the greater good is ?

No. People should be able to do whatever they want with their money. Yeah those are super important causes but no one likes being forced to donate. It should come from a heart that wants to donate.

should they? absolutely. Would I donate if I had millions? Of course. but the thought of forcing people with loads of money to donate it is actually kind of terrifying.

Well, there are definitely benefits to donating. A lot of donations can be considered as a tax deduction which is why a lot of rich people DO in fact donate because they can use that donation as a deduction when filing their taxes. Take Donald Trump for example. He has in fact made huge contributions to various charitable organizations. Now, whether he did all that out of the goodness of his heart... or so he could use it as a deduction... who knows... but, he has given quite generously to a lot of different charities. So in my opinion, it is in a way, kinda sort of a requirement if you want a tax break, and it is regulated through taxes...

No, you can't force someone to spend their money.
Especially if they disagree with the cause - donating to churches or funding for places that offer abortions. 
Also what qualifies as an "insane amount of money"? Millions? Billions? 
My partner has already paid £3m in taxes to our country and my partner isn't even 35. It helps with NHS, despite neither of us use the NHS because of terrible experiences. It's not like we wouldn't pay taxes, but being forced to pay for a service we don't believe in sucks.

Is it the right thing to do, sure but you can't mandate it.
If we can't tell people who receive state and federal money what they can spend it on why the fuck would we think we can dictate what someone can do with their personal money?
Let's only focus on our own money regardless of if we are judging the poor or the rich.

Only thing anyone should have to pay are their taxes, child support, etc. No forcing people to donate.
