So I need help with my assignment and I also thought this was a controversial topic. How do politicians (any of your choice) use language to manipulate us and assert power? 
Bonus question, do ALL politicians use manipulation?

All of them do. That is what their job is. Many are attorneys who understand the law, some are well spoken members of society, some are famous for being familiar. 
   
When you elect an official to office (even someone like a mayor), you are asking them to speak on your behalf, and represent your interests to the best of their ability.

I'm not sure if Hitler really counts since he was the Chancellor in the 30s but I know he won people over by making vague promises whilst promising to make Germany great again. He didn't go into specifics and that's how people believed he was good.

The language most use strikes fear into ppl, they use persuasive words that ignites what ppl are already feeling and thinking. The average person does not have the linguistics of a politician that requires a set of skills most of us ppl are not privy to. 
Manipulation- the control or influence of a person or situation in a cleverly, unfairly, or unscrupulously manner.

Charisma is the first one that pops to mind. 
Obama is an extremely Charismatic politician. He seems funny, he seems empathetic, and I think he'd be a great sales person tbh. I think that those qualities make him easy to want to trust. And that makes you more willing to believe in what he says. 
He also came across as very idealistic. Which I think a lot of the younger voters related to.

Another one is using fear tactics. I would say that that's more Trump. 
Trump got to where he is by using people's fears. Genuine fears of (i.e.) terrorism, but then using those fears to target specific groups. It makes the fear more tangible, and voters are more likely to see those fears becoming a reality. 
In doing so, he makes out that he's the person who can stop those fears becoming true, and in doing so, make the country better. 
Using minority groups as scapegoats is a frequently used tactic by those in power to place the blame. It's also, sadly, a successful technique.

Both sides, whether they preach for hope and an idealistic future or whether they focused on fear, are guilty of using emotive language, and inclusive language. 
Hillary focused a lot on women and women's rights (which is great). But she knew that topics like extending the legal abortion time frame - in connection to a woman's right to chose- was an emotive subject that were going to appeal to many women. 
Words like "our" and "we" make politicians again seem more relatable. It makes them seem like they have common interests and goals as the public. 
Politicians are supposed to manipulate (to a degree). I would compare them to sales people. They have to use the techniques that are best going to sell what they have to offer. They have to get the majority on their side.

A lot of political figures use 'we' instead of 'I'. For example: "we have made mistakes" instead of "I have made mistakes". It's takes the blame off of them, we're more inclined to blame the mysterious 'they' than the person responsible

I saw this documentary where all humans follow authority, even when that person is telling them to do something bad. the minority stands up and doesnt do it, but the rest just go along with it. if these politicians are asserting authority onto the people, most likely, people will follow. it's called Human Behavior Experiments and it's very fascinating. check it out.

They use advertising and persuasive techniques like the rule of 3, grandiose ideas and repetition. They use inclusive language that appeals to the masses (think make America great again). Politicians are salesmen so yes they manipulate. They have powerful rhetoric- have a look at some famous speeches and see what they do. Hitler was a brilliant orator and look at the power he wielded. Martin Luther King's I had a dream speech is also very powerful for analysis.
