Why breakup with you tho? Can't he get himself together while being with you? To me, the "pause" thing doesn't mean anything. If I felt like I needed some time to "get myself together" I would talk about it with my boyfriend and try to do it with him by my side. Having someone that loves you can only help you get yourself together and grow. 
But, at the end of the day, that's what I think! If you feel like giving him some space and time, follow your instinct!

My question is, what difference does it make? He’s breaking up with you. If someone needs space for whatever reason, I’d give them so much space they’d swear they were an astronaut. Focus on you and living your life. If it’s meant to be, you’ll find your way back to each other.

If he’s not willing to stick out the rough times he doesn’t deserve another chance. Breaking up solves nothing so if you get back together you’re just prolonging another break up, and heart break. I’d say save yourself the pain and move on. You deserve someone willing to fight for you, not someone that gives up when the going gets tough

Imma tell you straight up from experience I’ve been told this by an ex saying he wanted to go on break for a while and after seeing how much it upset me he said nevermind. 
I thought it was just a one time thing and ignored it, right? Nope. He ended up wanting out again and said the same thing so I just broke it off. 
It’s like others have said. To me that means wanting to keep you on the side just in case he doesn’t have any luck, (genuinely that’s what happened to me). If your Bf or gf needs a “break” from you then it’s not meant to be. You’re either with someone and want to stay with them or not. “I think we should take a break” is 100% a red flag.
