Ranting about alcohol

Why do so many people say that you should have alcohol at your wedding? Sorry but loved ones in my family are recovering alcoholics and it is at 8am, a brunch wedding. It's also against my family's (and my groom's!) religion to drink. You can go through a 30 minute reception and a 30 minute reception without drinking. It's not wild and crazy, just small and sensible. I thought my best friend and maid of honor would understand but she bailed out on me after I already paid for her bridesmaid dress and everything over a drink. It is one hour. In the morning. You don't need alcohol to have fun anyway. Geez.... I thought this day was about you witnessing the bond of love between two families, not just some party to get shit-faced.
