Abusive relationship

Help!

A few nights ago, my now ex boyfriend drove to my house, I got into his car & he drove us to a nearby car park so we could “talk”. We were on a break after fighting all the time, I was losing feelings so I needed time away from him. I was going out more often with friends & posting happy pictures on Snapchat & that seemed to get to him. During this time I decided to do a job which involved a lot of money & he didn’t like the type of work it was. I kept it from him because I knew it was my life & he wouldn’t understand. I did it for the money with no intention to hurt him. He found out & he got really angry. On this same night he asked me about it & I admitted everything to him. He lost the plot and got aggressive to the point where he put his hands on me.

Should I go to the police and make a statement? I understand his anger but at the same time, no one deserves to be treated the way I was despite my mistake. I know it hurt him but he reacted with aggression & said I deserved more. He has mentioned many times before when we were dating that he’d hit me if I cheated on him or even if I touched his phone he’d break my fingers. He has made the excuse saying he wouldn’t really do it but after our recent situation he proved me otherwise. He tried to justify it by saying he saw red & tried apologising for it. However, he’s always had this type of nature to him. This is just the first time it got to this extent, what should I do
