Can anyone relate??!!??

So I have a thyroid condition called Hashimoto thyroiditis. I take levothyroxine for it but the medication is causing me hair loss. I was placed on synthroid instead and my hair grew back but I can’t afford synthroid. My insurance only covers the generic brand. Even my doctor told me that the generic brand can cause hair loss. I don’t know what to do to prevent it! Can anyone relate at all even slightly? Or have any tips? I want long hair but at this rate I’ll probably cut it all off short.

I have Hashimoto's as well. It's not the medication that causes hair loss, it's the disease itself. I don't know how or what your doctor's said to make it seem like that's it. But I have never heard that, and I was diagnosed 8 years ago. It's the lack of hormones that causes hair loss. It could be that just your dosage on generic Levothyroxine needs to be adjusted, because often that is the issue when you start experiencing hair loss again. I know often when switching from Synthroid to Levothyroxine you need to up the dosage. I know how much it sucks. I was diagnosed over 8 years ago. It is extremely frustrating. Unfortunately insurance doesn't cover generic or Synthroid for me, so I've always had to pay out of pocket...because apparently it's too much to ask for your insurance to pay for the medicine that is the thing keeping you alive. 😒 Also I'm curious is your doctor an endocrinologist or a general practitioner?

Is there any way you could call your insurance company and explain the situation to them? I’m wondering if they could make an exception and cover the name brand if your doctor submitted something to them explaining the issue.

My mom, maternal grandpa, and I all have/had Hashimoto's. I've had the best results taking liothyronine along with my levothyroxine. Would your insurance cover that? It might make a difference for you. 
My mom swears that generic doesn't affect her, although I don't know for sure why that might be. The only thing I can think of is the difference in how we take our meds. 
Specifically: don't eat/drink anything rich in iron or calcium within four hours of taking your meds, always take them on an empty stomach, and give them an hour to be absorbed before eating or drinking anything. My mom doesn't do these things, but I do, so maybe that has something to do with synthroid vs levothyroxine's effectiveness...?
