DV: If the woman is the violent one, should you show her empathy as you are also a female?

To explain my question, a girl I know gets very angry and has hit her boyfriend in public after screaming at him and throwing tantrums.
A friend of mine, who has been in a DV relationship and who will not tolerate men behaving like that, says that we need to show this girl some empathy as she 'clearly has mental health issues' and as someone dealing with MH conditions, I should "understand what she's going through". But I don't. Because I've never turned violent to a guy I'm seeing.

I read an article on the Internet not long ago about a woman explaining why her husband only hit her once. She was bipolar and would go into fits of rage and bear on him. It got so bad one night he had to hit her and knock her out. He took her to the hospital and told them what happened and finally got her help. Men get abused also.
