Which Grade?

My daughter is 6, she turns 7 in January. She is currently in 1st grade. She has a close cousin that is 6 weeks older than her and in 2nd grade. My daughter is looked down on (by this cousins family) like she’s behind or not as smart even though she gets good grades. So I ask you Should she be in 1st or 2nd grade considering her age and all that.

Starting school earlier is linked to anxiety as an adult. So I think it's better to be one of the older kids in the grade. 🤷‍♀️

Different states have different cut off dates. When and where I grew up the cut off date was Dec 31 and I was born at the end of the year so I started 1st grade early and was one of the youngest kids in my class all the time (maybe like the cousin). My SO grew up where the cutoff was a different date and he was one of the oldest in his class (maybe like your child). As long as they’re both getting an education there shouldn’t be any judgement, sounds like a bunch of a-holes.

You start kindergarten when you’re 5 so you turn 6 that year. Then when you start 1st grade you’re 6 and turn 7 that year. They have a cut off date for when you have to be 5 before the next school year. Did your daughter just miss that cut off date to start with her cousin? My cousin is actually older than me but a grade level below. I skipped 1st grade due to moving states and already learning everything they taught. My family NEVER looked down on my cousin in any way. I think she was actually liked better. I think if it’s bothering you you should talk to your family and let them know how you feel.

She should be in the grade that she tests best in. If you move her ahead or behind when she isn’t ready, it can be detrimental to the rest of her schooling career (by not having a solid educational foundation)

6 turning 7 is a common age to be in 1st grade. Nothing wrong with whatever age you are in whatever grade but your daughters age is the norm. 2nd grade is usually 7 turning 8.

According to her birthday she should have started kindergarten in Sept. 2016. And 1st grade Sept. 2017. So she is where she should be all because of her birthday. As far as the cousin somewhere she got in early. Just because she is in a grade a head of your daughter doesn't mean she's smarter, just remind your daughter of that. 
I managed to start school early just because I was potty trained early and got into preschool.

It depends on her birthday and what grade she is ready for. My 7 year old is a first grader because his birthday is in October, so his Kindergarten start date was delayed because.of their cut off. My youngest will be the same. Meanwhile, my oldest is one.of the youngest in his class because he has an earlier birthday.
If you're daughter is doing well and happy where she is, leave her alone.
