he contradicted himself and I'm hurt

I asked my partner the other week if he was ready to start trying for another baby (we have a 7 month old) and he said he wanted to wait 3 years, I was a bit bummed but I didn't bring it up again until today where I asked him if he really did wanna wait so long, and he said no I want one now, I was so overwhelmed and happy and I asked if we could start trying after Christmas, to which he said no I want one now but we can't. confused I asked him what do you mean, and he said we can't have one now because we need to think about your job and we are still young, but I would like one. He has really fucked with my head and upset me a lot, I started crying and now he's gone to sit upstairs while I sit alone downstairs because I didn't understand what he was saying. I'm so hurt
