Is obesity the Government Business?

I am curious on everyone's opinion on whether the Government should be involved with childhood obesity.

I think they should continue to publish info on eating healthy, and work on improving the quality of public school lunches. 
I don’t think protective services should intervene for obesity in most cases.

child obesity starts in the individuals' homes. I honestly feel if a child's weight is becoming a concern that they should recommend sites and pamphlets for the parents so they can see what they should be doing better. A LOT of it is about diet, which children can't really help. They eat what their parents give them. all the government can do is change school lunches, which they already did

Yes. So much food is marketed as being healthy and good for us when it isn't. Why is it even legal to have food filled with chemicals? There is a major lack of information and education regarding healthy eating and living. Cost of living is so high that people have to work so hard and such long hours that there isn't a ton of time to prepare healthy meals. I think we all have to take responsibility for ourselves and our family but I also think the government plays a part to some degree.

Any health concern becomes the government’s business if people rely on the government for healthcare or if the government represents its people.

A large portion of the obese population in America are less fortunate families who simply cannot afford healthy food. Personally, I would rather take my kids to McDonalds and fill their bellies for cheap than leave them hungry with the little fresh fruit and veggies that I could afford. This is a problem that goes beyond individual health.

Yes. Sugar is a major contributor to obesity. Sugar is in almost EVERYTHING and in insanely large amounts. Government or FDA should put a restriction on sugar in foods marketed towards children. It’s recommended kids have 6 teaspoons of sugar a day. One can of pop has 7.5 teaspoons. One pack of fruit snacks has almost 3 teaspoons of sugar.

I think there needs to be better food provided at schools. The lunches are full of unhealthy calories, GMO and sodium. American schools look like a joke to other countries and I can see why.

It's been proven that obese people have more health costs, and that it ends up costing the government more. So I would say yes just as much as smoking, drinking, and doing drugs.
