how many pets is too many?

hubby and I rent a 2 bedroom house and have 2 cats and a dog.  2 cats 1.5 yrs., nearly 12 yrs., and 3 year old golden.  in a perfect world we would get a second dog but have tentatively capped us at 3 pets.  wdyt? no 2nd dog?

How big and secure is the garden? I have six dogs and it takes a lot of land and time. Plus being far enough that neighbors aren't affected by any barking. One dog is very different from two.

No second dog. We have three dogs and a nice sized corner lot and even that’s not enough room for them. They’re 55, 70, and 30 pound dogs. I would love a cat, but it isn’t our home (we’re renting as well) and I’d hate to get a cat and them mark everywhere because you cannot get those smells up without replacing all the flooring. Even litter box smells take a while to leave a home once it’s gone. The smell clings to the walls. Our dogs are kennel trained and house trained so the likelihood of them causing damages is minimal. Plus our landlord capped us at the three and barely let it slide except we have insurance for them that covers damages to the property and, God forbid, physical damages to a person. Sure you want another pet, who doesn’t? But you don’t NEED one and it seems your landlord agrees since they capped you. Respect their wishes, after all it’s THEIR house.

In my ideal world I'd have 2-3 cats and 2 dogs. However it's just not right for the household right now. I have to be happy with 2 cats for now. Grumpy old cat doesn't even like the other cat. ;)
If you have no limits, and all house mates will be okay with another dog. Do it. Fill your heart with another :D

Does your landlord have a limit to the amount of pets you can have?? 
I have 3 dogs (2 large, 1 medium) & 2 house cats. I also feed/care for a stray/feral cat community (about 15 total -- I don't let these enter my home at all, but nonetheless I care for them they've  all been trapped,fixed, and vaccinated). 
I'm currently considering adopting another dog actually 😬
If your landlord allows it, you have time for it, and can afford it -- 
why not?!
