... but what is American?

I know this may be a bit of a random post, but this app has proven to give pretty decent commentary or advice on a range of topics, so I wanted to ask ...what are some things that are strictly 100% American? (Foods, holidays, things, anything) What are good, solid, identifying things about America or being American?

Ironically, I was born here in the US, but grew up in pretty extreme poverty, and due to lack of money, resources, and a nonexistent extended-family life, we never really had any major culturally defining traditions growing up. We do celebrate thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, and the 4th, but out of the four, thanksgiving and the 4th of July are the only two not basically universal, and our typical family thanksgivings or 4th celebrations have always been very simple. Other than that, we lead a pretty basic, standard, run-of-the-mill life.

I married a Latino, and began to experience a different culture first hand. I've found that the Mexican culture is considerably all-encompassing, and pretty dominating. And it's made me realize many things, mainly that Americans don't really have a "culture". I feel like everyone else has an "identity" that they can cling to, celebrate, and be respected for, but when you're an American... that's it. That's all you've got. You are American. Hallelujah. There's no like, cultural or traditional clothes, there's not much of a fully American cuisine or very much variety in the food, and I honestly don't even know what, or if there is even any really "American" music or style. America seems like the odd one out to the rest of the world anyway, with our metric system and the like.

I love my husband, and I respect his background, but I feel like I've lost myself too. I feel stupid too that I know so little about any kind of substantial traditions, and I just feel like I've gotten a whole new perspective on my life in general, being married, and it's not particularly a happy outlook. I want to have an identity, other than being poor and family-less.

The things that WOULD otherwise define me, such as my faith, hobbies, or personality in general, don't seem to amount to much or be acknowledged. I just feel like ME has faded into the background. It makes for a pretty crappy feeling..

I also have a small amount of Finnish roots, but what I know about Finnish culture is even less than what I know about being American.
