Is Spanish a sexist language?
Okay so there’s been a lot of talk about gender neutral language (rather you agree or disagree with it you can’t deny that it’s something that’s been the center of many debates).
Now, for those who don’t know the Spanish-language deals with masculine and feminine. In other words all words essentially have a gender. For example, the word “the” can be translated into “el” which is a masculine word or “la” which still means “the” but is the feminine equivalent of it.
The ending of the word is also a good indication of the gender of the word as well. Words that end in an “o” are often masculine while words that end in an “a” are often feminine. For example:
NiñA= female child
NiñO= male child
Furthermore, as with most languages the male form dominates. For example, the parents of three girls and one boy would refer to their children as “hijos” (masculine plural) despite the overwhelming female majority.
So with alllll this being said (keep in mind that I truly struggled trying to learn Spanish in High School lmao) do you think that Spanish is a sexist language or is political correctness simply being taken too far?
On one hand people have argued that yes, male centered language just feeds into male centered ideology; on the other hand people have argued that no, changing the very foundation of an entire language is impractical and something as simple as the language you speak doesn’t make you sexist, it’s your actions and personal views.
* keep in mind that Spanish isn’t the only language structured this way, so depending on what you voted, do you feel that same way about other languages as well? *
