Can sex make your flow heavier?

I’ve been on birth control for three years now for periods. So it’s very light now and regulated. I just started having sex and i had sex the same day my period started but before it started, earlier in the day. it made my cramps really really bad and now two days later my flow is soooo heavy. I soaked through a tampon overnight which I hardly ever do. I just want to know if having sex has any impact on this, I wouldn’t think so but I have no other explanation
