Successful vbac (first pregnancy was emergency c section following failed induction)
My birth story: baby number two another girl born 3rd may at 3:11pm weighing 8lb 5oz!
Following an emergency c section due to a failed induction with my first baby I was determined to have a vbac birth this time around. I was induced with my first due to going over my 'due' date at 41+5. I believe that she was just not ready at this time but felt pressured into being induced.
This time I completely declined to be induced.
Due to not having the same midwife throughout my pregnancy I had to keep expressing this wish.
As I got to 40 weeks I was offered to be induced. The midwife who I was seeing at that visit was really questioning my choice and said I should go away and really think about being induced!! Anyway I declined being induced and any sweeps and was booked in to see the consultant at 41 weeks.
41 weeks came and the consultant offered me a sweep. I declined, and said if the baby didn't come what was I going to do? We agreed to a repeat c section at 42+2 if baby didn't come by then.
42 weeks exactly woke up with a few pains not too bad but regular every 10/15 minutes. Got a shower and started timing the contractions which were 10 minutes apart but still not that painful. Thought they might be a false start.
One hour later contractions coming every 5 minutes and having to squeeze partners hand. He and my mum suggested we go to hospital but I was trying to stay at home as long as possible. Half an hour later the contractions were still 5 mins apart but getting intense so agreed to go to hospital.
On the way they really got intense had to pull car over a couple of times and when I got to the hospital I had several intense contractions before I made it to the delivery suite. At the delivery suite we were told there would be a wait! But after I had two more contractions I was taken to a delivery room. This was at 2:20pm.
Pain increased rapidly was horrendous gas and air did nothing.
Water broke at 2:40pm.
Examined just after this was at 8cm! Baby heart rate dropped slightly and midwife was concerned due to previous c section and scar. She was prepping me for surgery when the consultant came in examined me and stated that I was at 10cm and the baby was coming naturally! Due to the speed of the labour I had been fighting the pain and pushing but now I was ready to push...and didn't really have a choice but felt more in control.
Biting down in the gas and air nozzle( which did more than breathing it in!) 3 sets of pushes later and Sophie was born at 3:11pm!
So a successful vbac! No induction! A very happy mum and baby! Sorry it's long I just liked reading these stories to give me hope I could do it. I was prepared for a c section if that's what was to be but I was glad I didn't have intervention when it wasn't medically needed.
So I hope this post helps another who may be feeling anxious about a vbac xx
