confused

so recently my boyfriend broke up with me and I'm so confused about the situation, can someone help me. leading up to the break up we were so in love, he was constantly telling me how beautiful of am and how I am the love of his life and all this other stuff, then out of the blue he says that he is stresses with work and uni, and he has no time for anything over Christmas. he also said is is not breaking up with me completely he just wants a break, but it had been a month now and he hardly talks to me. I don't understand how he can go from being so in love with me and making all the first moves, to absolutely nothing in one day.
