Question

When can you give baby water? My mil keeps telling me my baby is thirsty and I should give him sips of water? I hate this idea and I’m not going to do it and I already told my boyfriend hell no we aren’t giving him water he is only 3 months old and EBF. I heard it can be harmful this young

Yeah she’s not educated about it - your baby gets nourishment and hydration from your breast milk. You should never give a baby water before 6 months, and if she insists tell her to do some research on the babies that die from it. Also, minding her own business will serve her well as you raise your child, ugh.

No earlier than six months and only if they need it. Any earlier is extremely harmful to their kidneys as they aren’t developed enough for that. They get all the water they need from formula or breast milk

At 3 months I wouldn’t do it my daughters pediatrician told me babies can have a seizure if they take in too much water. The milk is enough.

you're so right! there is MORE than enough water in your milk. if he is thirsty, then he will drink from tit. water is way too risky, especially at three months. call your ped and ask so you can tell your MIL Dr says it's a big no no, then she can't argue with you.

Only sips if they show interest 6mo-1yr.
Sippy cups of water okay after 1yr.

The rules have changed since the last generation that had us.  I was talking with my mom the other day and we were discussing when she comes after the baby is born and how excited she was to help feed the baby and I told her I will be trying to breastfeed if possible.  She thought you had to introduce a baby to a bottle right away, and she told me that the doctors used to tell them to supplement with water if they didn’t think the baby was getting enough to help fill them up.  The information is just different now and my mom wasn’t able to breastfeed me so what she knows is just different.  This isn’t the case anymore; that’s where she’s getting that from!

My dr said to only give water at this age if your baby is dehydrated- my son wasn’t pooping and when he was it was thick
