TTC failures

I have an 8 month old son and my husband and I are wanting another baby so they would be close in age. However, I am still breastfeeding and we have been trying since November to conceive. I just got my first period back in November. We have had unprotected sex numerous times throughout the month each month and still nothing. I know it can take awhile. I am wondering if even though I have a period does that mean I have ovulated too? I don’t know much about these things as my first baby was conceived the first time we tried. We didn’t have to track anything.
