Avent or Medela? Please comment why.

Question

I’m planning on breastfeeding, and I’m looking into the different bottles/pumps/accessories. I really like the Avent bottles but I’ve heard Medela is the best breast pump. What do you ladies think? I’m a first time mom as well, so I’m completely clueless on this subject 🤷‍♀️

I have a medela pump, but I feed baby with dr browns. You don't have to use the same brand for bottles and your pump.

I exclusively pumped for a year with my son, while also simultaneously feeding my friends adopted baby that entire time. I pumped 7-8 times per day for that entire year (so a crap ton haha). Even with that much use, my Medela still looks new and works amazing!!!! I have absolutely no complaints!! It's super easy to use because you just turn it on then there aren't separate dials for speed and suction like the spectra. It's more idiot proof haha because there's one dial that is pre set for a nipple stimulation warmup, then automatically adjusts to a pump setting. My friend said trying to juggle the different dials while simultaneously holding the flanges on with her spectra was a nightmare, and she could hardly get anything out. I told her to give my Medela a shot, and she literally got out more than double what she could get with her spectra. Plus, you can affordably buy spare/extra Medela parts just about anywhere. Target even sells them. Most pumps you have to specialty order the spare parts from the manufacturer (spectra included) which is not only way more inconvenient, it’s also more expensive . And I think there is a reason most hospitals use Medela brand pumps. I can't rave about it enough!

Spectra. I exclusively pumped for 8 months with our son, and it was amazing. I would never get another kind after that experience. I chose it initially based on reviews I’d read online from women that had used both Medela and Spectra and compared the two.

Whatever you choose don't buy a tons of bottles before baby arrives. It can take a while to find a nipple/bottle that your baby will take ....mine wouldn't take a bottle at all and I spent a fortune on bottles and nipples....even spent $25 on one of the special medela nipples and no luck lol. Medela pump, but their bottles are cheap and don't have a venting system (at least the ones I have) so I don't recommend those as they cause more gas and we had issues with the nipples collapsing because of it.

I had the medela pump but used different bottles because my baby refused medela bottles after a few weeks. We used Mam, Nuby and eventually Lansinoh Mama bottles. I loved my pump though!

I used the models one and the bottles that came with the pump but then I would take it and fill my doctor brown bottles with it because that’s what my kids had to drink from Was doctor Browns and they are my favorite.
