Define White Privilege?

CJ

So my friend texted me today saying how she was “so mad about hearing about white privilege” when she couldn’t take a meal up to her room in her hotel, but the same black desk woman let other black women take meals up to their room and how it was hypocritical.

I am not here to slam my friend, but the comment did rub me the wrong way and I am trying to figure out why.

I think that part of it is that it doesn’t feel like she understands what white privilege actually is. In my mind, it has never been just a white person being racist. In my mind it’s when an entire race enjoys the benefit of being assumed to be competent and at least moderately intelligent while another race or races are assumed to be less, all before any interactions occur. Yes, White Privilege can easily be turned into racism when someone begins to believe in the systemic ideology and starts to feel entitled and like they actually are better, but you can have white privilege even if you aren’t racist yourself.

That is how I see it anyways. My questions are these: first, am I correct in my definition? Second, how do I approach telling someone that without being rude about it?

And thanks for reading. <3 it honestly helped me organize my thoughts just writing it out.
