I'll be damned if anyone has the nerve to tell me I'm not a step mom just because my SO and I aren't married. We have been together for YEARS, we all live in the same house. I cook, clean, bathe, help her with homework, discipline, teach, and nurture her the same way I do my biological daughter. He has full custody of her, her mom hasn't seen her since before he and I started dating, I think even though we arent married I do everything a stepmother/mother does for a child. 
My dad is married, his wife has done nothing for me, she is not my stepmom, she is my dad's wife. Being a parent is about what you do for a child, how you sacrifice for a child, and what you expect in return. If you take care of, love, teach, and help a child grow and put their needs before yours while expecting nothing in return, then I think you qualify as a parent.
But no, if you don't take care of the child and don't do the things parents do for children, you aren't a parent of any kind.

I hit yes on accident and meant to hit no. You are not a step mom unless you take care of those children like they're you're own. Dating someone with kids without loving them and caring for them doesn't make you anything but a girlfriend.

If the relationship is new, no. If the relationship has been going on for a long time, then yes. My dad and his girlfriend aren’t married, but I still call her my step mom.

If the “ title “ is important than why not just get married ? I don’t think having a title means shit anyways. You can take care of your so kids and all live together and act like a real step mom or you can be married to a man with kids and not do a damn thing for his kids or care about them at all so what’s in a title anyways? It’s more about the role you play at the end of the day and how the children would view you in their lives.

No way. Especially if the relationship is fairly new. And by new I mean like two years. Sure you can be in a relationship much sooner than that, but when kids are involved, I think it’s much more serious and you have to be cautious.
