Boyfriend and condom struggles

So when my boyfriend and I got together we were both virgins and so sexually inexperienced. We started off using condoms but we found he struggled to keep an erection whilst wearing one (getting and staying hard was not an issue anywhere else) and he complained he didn't feel anything as well as our struggles putting one on. I was already on the pill for a condition I have so we gave up with condoms and relied on the pill. However looking back I think a lot of these issues stemmed from inexperience, embarrassment and first time nerves, as is common with your first sexual relationship.

So fast forward 8 months and we have relied on the pill and both became a lot more confident and experienced with sex, and I've started to really think about contraception . We looked at the options and due to a condition I have, i decided it would be best to stay on the pill and use condoms as a backup, I'm only 18 would like the peace of mind that we are both safe.

I brought up using condoms again, however I understand that he may have been embarrassed or anxious to use them so I used the angle that i would be willing to practise putting them on together, try different types and there would be no pressure in terms of performance etc. However he just seemed dismissive from the mention of using condoms again, I mean I get that as a guy he would think that his sex life is under threat or something silly so I said that I am simply protecting myself and us and that if he didn't want to wear one then we won't have Sex, but no matter which way I phrase it he just doesn't seem to understand that although this will take some practise, this is safer and more responsible thing to do and it's frustrating. He is being insulting, saying I'm being pressured into this (I'm obviously not) and that I'm making a horrible decision and being selfish because he won't feel anything and all the typical condom exuses. He is a very lovely boyfriend and we have been together 3 years so this type of response isn't the usual... How can I handle this?
