Ok so, me and my husband are expecting and we found out it’s going to be a girl. My sister asked if we had picked a name and my boyfriend had thrown out this name when we found out it was a girl and we both just loved it. Well when I told my sister the name she got kind of mad and said she had ALWAYS loved that name for a little girl and claimed I stole it from her when I honestly had never remembered hearing the name until my boyfriend asked if I liked it and I thought it was unique and beautiful but now my sister is upset. I told her it’s silly to save the name for her and she may never have a girl or may even meet a guy she has kids with that doesn’t like the name and then neither of us will get to use it. So should I respect “dibs” and not use the name because she apparently has loved the name for years or that’s dumb and I can use the name if I want to?? For what it’s worth as well, I also told her that it took us a long time to really agree on a name we both loved for a girl.

If you really don’t remember hearing it from her and you guys love it go for it. I would be mad if my sister used the name I told her I love but only if I was sure I told her and she knew. If it’s a coincidence and I never told her I could understand her using it.

Use the name!! My step sister has pulled the same shit with me, claiming I stole a name I'd never heard her express an interest in. She isn't even pregnant, there's no guarantee she'll have a baby of that gender, and even if she did, she might not go for the name at the end of it! So damn right I'm "stealing" that name.

My mom had the name Emily picked out for my sister for years. She and my aunt got pregnant at almost the same time, and she made the mistake of telling my aunt the name she had picked. Well, my aunt and uncle stole it and their daughter was born about 3 weeks before my little sister. But my mom didn't care. She named my sister Emilie. She said "I've had this name picked out before [aunt and uncle] even laid eyes on each other, so I'm not gonna let them steal a name. 
Nobody has a monopoly on a name. If you've agreed on a name with your significant other, then use it. It's so hard to find one both parents like. And if she likes the name so much, nobody is stopping her from using it. But as of right now, she has no baby and not one in sight, and you didn't maliciously steal it from her. It's a free country and she can't tell you what to name your kid. I say go for it!

Normally I say no don’t take the name if she has been in love with it forever, but if she is just claiming to love it right now and you never knew then honestly look at her and say “you’ll see one day how hard it is to choose a name. This is the first name we both like, AND I would have respected this had I KNOWN this was a name you were obsessing over. You must not have liked it that much if I didn’t even know...” for instance, my sis yet LOVES the name Olivia. I would never use that name because she ALWAYS says how MUH she loves it. When she was pregnant she said if it’s a girl her name will be olivia. She’s not done having kids so if my next is a girl I would never choose that name. But if you had no clue then... sorry sis....

First come first serve...she'll either get over it or your daughter and her future daughter can just have the same name.

Name your child what you want. You get first pick since you’re pregnant at the moment. Why save a name for her when she’s not pregnant and may never use the name?

your sister can use it as a middle name for one of her daughters (that she may not even have). i think it’s over dramatic to get angry at having called dibs on a name.
