Long distance

Okay, there is this guy and we have known each other since we were like 8. The thing is I have liked him since then and my family moved about 24 hours away a couple years ago. I go and visit about with my family about 1 time every year and his mom and him visit every summer just about. He knows I have liked him and he likes me, for some odd reason I stopped talking to him because life got hectic but the thing is I have been thinking about him a lot recently. He is 2 years older but our parents are best friends(mom's to be exact) so there is no issue there but I don't know if I should just get in touch with him again. He is a really smart, good hearted guy and I don't know if this whole long distance thing could work. I'm just not sure what to do.
