Would you spank your child??

As a kid I was spanked if I talked when not spoken to first, for getting my shoes dirty, for not finishing food, etc. it was not just a pop on the bottom it was a leather belt every time. I don't think this was necessary for me, as I was in particular, a well behaved kid. I know I'm biased, but I do not think I will be spanking my kids when and if I do end up having them.

No. Spanking your child will not solve anything, it will just make your child be scared of you growing up. You can teach your child right from wrong by talking to them, taking away their toys for a while, grounding them...etc. When i got hit as a child it only made me become more sneaky and not talk to my parents about things because i was afraid of getting beat up again.

I was spanked with a wooden paddle. My dad would beat me with it until I had bruises or cuts on my bottom. It is abuse. Now I’m 20, and my whole life even during everyday life, when ever my dad raises his arm or hand I flinch, and get scared. He always jokes “why do you flinch? You act like you were abused as a child!” It pisses me off cause he doesn’t know he DID ABUSE ME.

I thinking “spanking” is too broad a term. There’s whooping your kid’s ass and there’s giving your kid a swat on the ass. And rewards/punishments don’t work universally, what works for one kid may not work for another.

I will never do this to my kids, I was a victim of a highly abusive family and I watched spanking get turned into something my father took as an ego boost to dominate his children. Don't ever let it get so far that your children will hate and fear you forever. I hate my family and I won't ever make their mistakes.

There are so many other ways to approach discipline. As a mental health clinician, I really don’t see the benefits of spanking outweighing the costs. Ever.

I think it's kinda screwed up that adults look at a kid who's misbehaving and go, "Ah, yes, the obvious solution is to hurt this child." 
There's also an argument to be made that the butt is a private place (you'd find it pretty disturbing if someone grabbed a kid's bum, so why is it ok to hit there?) and that archeological record shows that spanking has a longer record as a sexual practice than a childrearing one. 
Also, I've rarely if ever seen someone who can just let it go with spanking. It always seems to escalate to more.

i believe people are too sensitive now a days to spanking. & little swat on the butt never hurt anyone but physically making bruises and welts is VERY wrong. As a child, my grandparents were very old fashioned. If we didn't wash our hands before eating, if we were disrespectful or put our elbows on the table during dinner my grandma had a wooden spoon with all the grandchildren's name on it. i said "God dammit" at the dinner table in time and i instantly regretted it. later that night, i received a wooden spoon to my ass that ended up breaking.
