Pre-term labor from Braxton-Hicks

Caitlin

Alright guys, I have had Braxton Hicks about everyday from 24 weeks on. Until a couple days ago my doctors continued to call them normal even though at least twice a week they would be 6-8 an hour. The other morning I was at work taking it real real easy when I felt the urge to poop-NOW. So I ran to the bathroom and had diarrhea, the kind that 3am whiskey and Taco Bell will give you. Then while trying to sweat through the pain of diarrhea, I started having back pain. No biggie, I thought, I’ve just been standing too long and ate something just not right. After I finish I go back to work feeling a bit better, the back pain was just a dull nag at this point and contractions were about 4 an hour, also what I’ve been told is not a problem. I go back to work, the pain would increase but I’d breath through it. After about 15 minutes I was back on the toilet with some more, you guessed it, Taco Bell shits. The pain in my back increased from mild to moderate. At this point I just went to the break room with water and some chips and sat for about an hour and a half timing these contractions and breathing through this back ache. The contractions had become about every 5 minutes, and so fortunately I work in the hospital that is also providing my care, I just walked my big butt up to L&D; gave them my ID and they triaged me right away. They hooked me up to those super comfy monitors, and then saw that my contractions were literally going off the chart in intensity. They checked my cervix and I went from a 0 posterior high cervix, to dilated to 2 and 30% effaced in just under an hour and a half. Needless to say they immediately admitted me for preterm labor, called my husband up and they had pediatric doctors come in to council us on how having a preterm baby could affect his and our lives, and also the complications that arise with a 35 weeker. Needless to say I wasn’t scared until they gave me the option to be transferred to the bigger hospital in our area in case the baby did come....i’m active duty military in a military hospital so if they offer the civilian sector, shit isn’t looking good. We chose to stay for now since it was my doctor and my coworkers caring for me, I had faith they would give me everything they could. I was on a bolus IV penicillin drip, and medications every 4 hours along with a lovely steroid shot to my bum to promote my baby’s lung growth ASAP. Needless to say, by the grace of God 🙌🏻, after about 10 hours of contractions and severe back pain every 2-5 minutes labor stopped. They kept me for a total of 30 hours, which was miserable but I’m so thankful I was able to come home and have him bake just a little longer. In the end, I dilated to 2 cm “with some wiggle room” they can now feel his head fairly easy. On the bright side, I fit in a lot of my older T-shirts now that his big head is in my pelvis 😂 I just wanted to share this experience so if any of you other mommas come across something similar, don’t overlook it. If I didn’t go in the exact time i did, if I sat for another 45 minutes, I might have missed the opportunity to stop my labor and could have given birth to a 5lbs little baby boy. But I’d like him to be at least 7 pounds so he’s nice and warm for this cold ass world. We’re very close! Stay positive and listen to your body!
