The arrival of Chance
Monday 15th January, 40weeks exactly (predicted due date) i woke up to do the usual early morning pee which was around 4am, no contractions or twinges so i decided to do nipple stimulation, never in a million years did i expect it to work, but it did, contractions were coming along very close together, so i decided to go back to sleep before they became intense. Woke up around 7:30 to sort out my 6 year old for school & lost my plug thats when i woke up my partner & explained i was in labour so he would have to take our son to school today. In the meantime i tidied the house, showered & repacked my maternity bag & then made a phone call to the maternity ward to let them know i were in labour & its a possibility i would be there soon. Its now 1:30pm & the pain is more intense so i decide its time to go hospital, my sister leaves work & makes her way to me & we head to the hospital. Walking was a chore, having to stop every time a contraction started, but we finally made it to the ward from the car park. I checked in at the hospital desk & waited to be seen for examination. Its 3pm iv now been examined & I’m only 2/3 cm dilated. At this point, I’m tired & hungry, so the midwife suggest i go for a walk around the hospital & get some food at the canteen, so we made the excruciating walk to the main hospital ward canteen, i threw up on the way, a poor man walked straight through it & nearly slipped over (his fault for not looking where he was walking lol) i was in too much pain to care at this point. We finally made it to the canteen & sat down, which was so uncomfortable, i decided i was in too much pain to eat & it would have been pointless anyway, as i would most likely bring it back up, my partner grabbed something to eat & my sister kept me entertained with funny stories to pass the time. A hour had passed & i decided its best we make our way back to the maternity ward cause i felt like i needed to push. It felt like the longest walk ever, having to stop with each contraction but we finally made it. I was instructed to wait in the waiting room for my midwife, which felt like forever, at this point I’m kneeling on the floor, which a expecting mother also waiting recommended (she was on her 7th child) i commended her for her strength. Its amazing what pain us women can endure. Anyway a couple more minutes went by & my midwife finally arrived & we had a quick discussion on my options for birth, i had a epidural with my first birth & would have happily had another but my midwife calmly explained there was much time for one & the suite on the (spires) maternity ward was ready. We made our way to the suite & i flopped myself on a beanbag & waited for pain relief (gas & air) i was on cloud nine & it was absolutely amazing. I laid there taking in the gas whilst the midwife filled the birthing pool, she suggested i try it & I’m so glad she did, it was the best experience ever. From the moment i got in the pool i felt the urge to push & my midwife told me to listen to my body & push if i needed to, she kept checking babies heart rate with a doppler to make sure he wasn’t distressed & told me to keep pushing at each contraction, as soon as she sees his head appear she will call for assistance. Next contraction my babies head is bearing, so they call for assistance, bear in mind my waters never went, so at this point I’m begging them to break my waters, but I’m told many women give birth without their waters going, so with the next contraction i give a big push & he’s out, water sack & all. The midwife scoops him up out the water & up onto my chest, his eyes are wide open starring right into my eyes, he was so content, humming away. Daddy cut the cord after it stopped pulsating.
Time of birth was 6:05pm with my son weighting 7lbs 1oz.
We arrived at the hospital at 2pm & checked out same day at 9pm. I was so happy to be able to get home to my excited 6 year old son. The whole birthing experience went so well i would happily do it again.
