Baby’s last name

I’ve gone through a lot of posts talking about if you’re not married then the baby should definitely get the mothers last name. Apparently it makes things easier, things like what? Can someone explain. Me and my child’s father aren’t even together but we have a wonderful relationship and I definitely will be giving my son his last name. Just trying to understand the objection with this.
